LSU sophomore Tyrann Mathieu has established himself as one of college football’s best players because of his ability to force turnovers.
Against West Virginia, Mathieu deflected a pass, caught it and ran 19 yards to put LSU a yard shy of the goal line just before halftime to help the Tigers take a 27-7 lead into the locker room.
On Saturday against Kentucky, Mathieu was again instrumental in LSU’s 35-7 win over the Wildcats.
With 4:30 left in the third quarter, Mathieu sacked Kentucky quarterback Maxwell Smith, stripped him of the ball and then ran 23 yards for a touchdown.
Just as his interception against the Mountaineers wasn’t necessarily the key play of the game, Mathieu’s TD against Kentucky wasn’t the turning point in the Tigers’ win.
But his ability to make spectacular plays is one of the reasons LSU is among the teams with serious national championship potential.
Thus far, Mathieu has 26 solo tackles, 10 assisted tackles, one and-a-half sacks, two forced fumbles, one interception and he’s scored two touchdowns.
For the second straight week, LSU’s Tyrann Mathieu produced college football’s play of the week with his sack, forced fumble and return for a touchdown.
