Video/Pics: Chris Carpenter Dives to Get Elvin Andrus

In case you didn’t watch game one of the 2011 World Series on Wednesday, you missed one of the greatest plays of the season.

With one out in the top of the first, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter made a headlong dive to beat Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus to the bag.

Andrus hit a ground ball to the right side of the infield that was caught by the Cardinals’ first baseman Albert Pujols.

Carpenter raced to cover the bag but Pujols’ toss led Carpenter too much for the pitcher to catch it in stride. Rather than let the speedy Andrus reach, Carpenter made a backhanded catch and dove for the bag.

The Cardinals’ pitcher hit the ground and skidded over the bag just before Andrus reached base, recording the out.
