Steelers Assistant Randy Fichtner Interested in Memphis Tigers Job

According to the Commercial Appeal, Pittsburgh Steelers assistant Randy Fichtner is interested in becoming the Memphis Tigers next head football coach.

Fichtner, a former University of Memphis offensive coordinator, has spent the past five seasons as an assistant coach for the Steelers.

He spent three seasons as the Steelers’ receivers coach and was promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2010.

Fichtner has served as an assistant for two former Tigers’ head coaches, beginning in 1990 when he was hired by Chuck Stobart to be the quarterbacks coach.

Former Tigers’ coach Tommy West hired Fichtner in 2001 to be the offensive coordinator, a position he held until 2006.

Fichtner has been mentioned as one of the possible candidates to replace Larry Porter, who was fired on Sunday.

In addition to Fichtner, Arkansas State coach Hugh Freeze, Louisiana Lafayette coach Mark Hudspeth and former Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt are considered to be on the Tigers’ list.
