Kobe Bryant’s wife Vanessa filed for divorce on Friday in Orange County, California, citing irreconcilable differences to end their 10-year marriage.
A statement from the Bryant’s representative reads, “The Bryant’s have resolved all issues incident to their divorce privately with the assistance of counsel and a judgment dissolving their marital status will be entered in 2012.”
According to Vanessa’s cousin Laila Laine, there was no prenuptial agreement. Vanessa said Kobe “loved her too much for one.”
Vanessa Bryant stood by Kobe throughout 2003 when he was accused of sexually assaulting Katelyn Faber in Colorado. The criminal case against him was dropped when Faber refused to testify, but a civil suit was settled out of court.
It makes you wonder why it took Vanessa so long to reach the inevitable conclusion that her marriage to Kobe was doomed from that point.
Actually, their marriage was doomed the day they wed. Kobe’s parents were strongly opposed to him marrying Vanessa and the nuptials led to an estrangement of more than two years.
Surely Vanessa had to know that Kobe, perhaps the world’s most widely recognized basketball player who also happens to be a member of the NBA’s marquee franchise, was a man who could have anything he wanted.
Maybe she put up a front to help Kobe recover from the public relations hit he took following the sexual assault allegations.
Or perhaps she considered filing for divorce at that time, but didn’t want to rock the apple cart. After all, she said that Kobe “loved her too much” and honestly believed that.
But if Kobe loved her so much, then why did he cheat on her?
Vanessa sounds like a woman that was naive and clearly didn’t want to acknowledge the obvious. It’s taken 10 years for her to finally come to the realization that she married the wrong guy.
She won’t have to worry about money and the kids will be well provided for, so things could be a lot worse for Vanessa.
But she should have ended her marriage to Kobe a long time ago when it was apparent their union was a charade.
