Former Senator Chris Dodd Calls Out SOPA/PIPA Protesters

Former U.S. Senator Chris Dodd said on Tuesday that web sites protesting against SOPA/PIPA were being irresponsible and abusing their power.

Dodd, who is the chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America – the primary backer of SOPA and PIPA – said that web site publishers who took part in Wednesday’s protest “intentionally skew the facts to incite their users in order to further their corporate interests.”

In a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black, Dodd was once called one of the most corrupt members of Congress according to the Center for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.

If anyone knows something about being irresponsible, abusing their power, skewing the facts and furthering their own interests, it most certainly is Chris Dodd.

dodd chrisIn December, Dodd actually told the audience attending the Entertainment Content Protection Summit that companies like Google who oppose SOPA/PIPA are tantamount to the getaway driver in a bank robbery.

“How do you justify a search engine providing for someone to go and steal something? A guy that drives the getaway car didn’t rob the bank necessarily, but they got you to the bank and they got you out of it, so they are accessories in my view,” said Dodd.

Dodd even attempted to draw a comparison between China censoring certain web sites from Google search results and the SOPA/PIPA bills making their way through both houses of Congress.

“When the Chinese told Google that they had to block sites or they couldn’t do [business] in their country, they managed to figure out how to block sites.”

Dodd clearly can’t distinguish the difference between censorship and web sites that engage in Internet piracy. And it’s interesting that Dodd would use the Chinese government as an example in his effort to get SOPA and PIPA passed.

It’s no secret that hackers in China and other countries are some of the primary culprits in the MPAA’s fight against content theft.

Since the U.S. government is basically powerless against hackers from foreign countries, the misguided efforts of some politicians have led them to believe that going after U.S. web sites is the best way to combat the problem.

That’s your government at work, and Dodd was one of those in government who worked it. And his pals in Congress are more than willing to flush the First Amendment down the toilet for Dodd and his Hollywood cronies.

Despite his rhetoric, the real reason Dodd is calling out those opposed to SOPA/PIPA is because he’s losing the battle.

According to an article that appeared on CNet, more U.S. Representatives and Senators are withdrawing their support of both bills.

The fight against SOPA/PIPA isn’t over, not by a long shot. The opposition to both of these bills must be steadfast and sustained.

The only way to rid ourselves of these proposed pieces of legislation is to grind them into dust, never to be resurrected.
