JM Van Horn’s Bio
During the first five years of my life, my family had lived in New Jersey, Kentucky, and Georgia, before finally settling down in South Florida in 1977. I spent the period of my life growing up under the mostly sunny skies around Fort Lauderdale playing football, baseball, soccer and even swimming.
I moved to the northern part of the state when I started my college life at Florida State University and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology & Criminal Justice. With a desire for an actual change of season and to move away from the hectic area of South Florida, I took the leap after graduation and moved to central Pennsylvania.
This was home for me in many ways, the place where I married my beautiful wife and where we celebrated the birth of our first son. After major life changes, the decision was made to move to where my wife grew up, Detroit.
Yes, Detroit.
When it comes to the sports world, my earliest memory was watching the Eagles – Raiders Super Bowl and becoming enthralled with the game. From that point on I was hooked and my parents always did their best to help support it. From taking me to Joe Robbie Stadium to see the Miami Dolphins play or my own practices and games.
When it comes to the teams where I am a complete homer, they are the Miami Dolphins, Florida State Seminoles, and Chicago Blackhawks. I have always enjoyed the game of baseball but have been fickle when it comes to my favorite teams.
With the move to Detroit, I have begun taken a liking to the Detroit Tigers who will probably make me a homer if my 4-year old son continues to show interest in them. Oh and I will do my best to make sure he is anything but a Lions fan, I do not think he could handle the heartache. And when it comes to fantasy sports, football and baseball reign supreme.
I have spent the last 5 years working as a free lance writer, from local newspapers to a few various web sites. I decided to create my own blog, Past the Pylon, where I covered the world of the NFL and developed a small following. Due to time constraints the decision was made to close the site down because of the lack of attention I could devote on a daily basis.
That was when Moondog came to my with a proposition, to continue writing about the sport I love for this site. It took me about all of two seconds to make the decision. Though we may not always agree on who is the best NFL team or top player, I am always open to discussion and thrive on it.
The more comments I see on articles, the more I enjoy. I will make it a point to always respond if there are follow-up comments or questions.
